It is the brand's two-seat flagship, replacing the 575 M Maranello in 2006 as a 2007 model. Styled by Pininfarina under the direction of Ferrari's Frank Stephenson, the 599 GTB debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2006. It is named for its total engine displacement (5999 cc), Gran Turismo Berlinetta nature, and the Fiorano Circuit test track used by Ferrari. Its 608 N·m (448 ft·lbf) of torque will also be a high for Ferrari's GT cars. Most of the modifications to the engine were done to allow it to fit in the Fiorano's engine bay (the original Enzo version could be taller as it would not block forward vision due to its mid-mounted position). Ferrari 599 HGTE An upgrade that improves the car's handling the package, also called HGTE or Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione, includes a modified set-up with stiffer springs and rear anti-roll bar as well as new calibration settings for the magneto-rheological shock absorbers when the manettino is at its sportier settings. The ride height has also been lowered, which lowers the car's centre of gravity. The package also includes optimised tyres featuring a compound that offers improved grip. The car's electronics have also changed. The gearbox's shifts are faster in high-performance settings, while new engine software improved accelerator response. The exhaust silencer was modified to produce more marked and thrilling sound under hard usage whilst still delivering just the right comfort levels at cruising speed. The 599XX is a car designed for track use only and is not street legal, based on 599 GTB. The rev limiter is raised to 9000 rpm, with the engine rated for 730 PS (540 kW; 720 hp) at 9000 rpm. Weight is reduced by cutting the weight of the engine unit components, and use of composites and carbon-fibre body parts, carbon-fibre brake pads. A new gearbox shift strategy is introduced to cut overall gear change time to 60 ms. Aerodynamics were retuned to give more downforce (280 kg (617 lb) at 200 km/h, 630 kg (1,389 lb) at 300 km/h). The car also includes 29/67 R19 front and 31/71 R19 rear tires with 19 x 11J wheel rims at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear. On 8 April 2010, Ferrari announced official details of the 599 GTO.[7] The car is a road-going version of the 599XX and Ferrari say the 599 GTO is their fastest road car ever, able to lap the Fiorano test circuit in 1 minute 24 seconds, one second faster than the Ferrari Enzo. Its engine produces 670 PS (493 kW; 661 bhp) at 8250 rpm, with 620 N·m (460 lb·ft) of torque at 6500 rpm.[8] Ferrari claims the 599 GTO can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 3.35 seconds and has a top speed of over 335 km/h (208 mph).[8] At 1,590 kilograms (3,500 lb), the 599 GTO weighs 100 kg (220 lb) less than the standard GTB.[9] Production will be limited to 599 cars. Its cabin tech isn't the best, but that doesn't stop it being one of our favourite cars ever made. The ice caps are melting because of the obscene heat emitted by the Enzo engine inside the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano HGTE. We kid you not. Two days into our test period with the car, the ludicrous heat radiating from this bonkers V12 engine caused the licence plate to melt off. Seriously. That extreme heat is a consequence of extreme power. The engine, named after the company's founder, produces a mammoth 620bhp. This helps the 599 accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds, and rampage all the way up to a maximum speed of 205mph. Numbers don't do it justice -- the car is so fast that we got the feeling it could speed around the circumference of the planet and crash into the back of itself. It's not all brute force though. The 599 also utilises some technological wizardry that, on the surface, sounds like something out of a science-fiction novel. Its suspension system isn't made of springs, for a start. It's constructed of magnetorheological fluid -- a liquid that becomes a solid when subjected to a magnetic field. That allows the 599's suspension characteristics to change in real-time. Drive Miss Daisy along a bumpy road and the suspension material maintains a liquid-like viscosity, softening the ride. Throw the car into a fast corner and an electric current is applied to the fluid. This solidifies the material in an instant, firming up the suspension so the 599 corners with increased stability. It works rather like the liquid-metal T-1000 Terminator, except it can't won't is less likely to kill you. Despite its fabulous straight-line speed, the 599's forte is its ability to navigate twisty roads, particularly if it has the HGTE (Handling Gran Turismo Evoluzione) upgrade. This package, which can be specified with a new 599 or retrofitted to older models, costs an extra £13,960. It lowers the car by 10mm, stiffens its springs by 17 per cent at the front and 15 per cent at the rear, reduces the time it takes to change gear from 100ms to 85ms, and remaps the magnetorheological damping system to more aggressively reduce roll. It makes the engine note more aggressive, too. It's no exaggeration to say the exhaust note is filthier than a box of smashed kittens. Actually, that is an exaggeration, but it really does sound murderously good. Nearly £14,000 for zero extra power and a few, apparently minor, tweaks smacks of greed on Ferrari's part, but believe us when we say it's worth every penny. Sure, you could use that money to buy, say, an entire Ford Fiesta, but you'd be missing out on the fun. The HGTE-equipped package makes the car feel so planted to the ground that you'd really have to be a rubbish driver or Cristiano Ronaldo to wreck it. The 599 is a big, heavy car, but it doesn't act like one because there's not a jot of understeer -- point it at a corner and it'll find its way to the exit like a heat-seeking missile finds a fat man jogging in leather. Anyone who wants to experiment with Top Gear-style power sliding is catered for, too. The steering wheel contains a manettino ('little lever' in Italian) which allows the driver to gradually reduce the level of traction control. Enter a corner too quickly in normal mode, and the power will be reduced before you enter a spin. Enter the same corner at the same speed in the sport or race modes, and the tail will kick out slightly, giving you a taste of what it feels like to go sideways before the computer reduces the power and applies the brakes to whichever wheel needs it, safely getting you back in line. Once the 599 has taught you when and how it'll lose traction, you'll want to go it alone by switching the traction control off completely. Without the electronic aids, you'll need to apply just the right amount of opposite lock and throttle to keep the car from spinning. Get it wrong, and it'll kill you, but get it right and the 599 goes from fabulous teacher to wonderful student. Ferrari is very good at using technology to help its cars defy the laws of physics, but it's not so great at providing the simple things, like a decent sat-nav, a half-decent stereo system or a speedometer that you can see and read. The 599's speedometer, located on the far right of the instrument binnacle, is barely legible, giving you a great excuse when the police inevitably catch you doing 195mph in a 20mph zone. Its stereo, supplied by Bose, delivers very unbalanced audio. There's just the right amount of bass, but so much treble that your ears will bleed if you crank it up to 11. Listening to it is like standing next to a subwoofer at a Prodigy gig with Mariah Carey screaming directly in your left ear. Neither of these flaws is quite as annoying as the sat-nav system squeezed into a 89mm (3.5-inch) multi-function display on the instrument binnacle. It doesn't have any maps installed for starters -- it offers turn-based guidance that merely tells you when next to make a left, right or 'half right' -- whatever that is. Luckily, the 599 has a rather large windscreen onto which you can attach a TomTom, and there's space -- just -- behind the seats for a paper map. Minor cabin-tech gripes aside, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano HGTE is a wonderful car. It's not perfect: petrol costs about a fiver for every 500 yards driven, and the £230,000 price tag on our test car might be better spent on something like a house or putting the kids through university. But none of these reasons is sufficient to stop us wanting to buy one, because the 599 really is a biblically wonderful piece of automotive engineering. We love it, and so will you. To obtain these benchmark levels of performance, two aspects were right at the top of our list of priorities from the outset: first of all trimming of weight, achieved using an all-aluminum chassis and body and in-depth study of aerodynamics: the cooling and intake vents are integrated seamlessly in the design of the vehicle body. On the nose section, the classic Ferrari vent, positioned centrally on the front fenders, optimizes the flow of air towards the radiator. Two generouslyscaled inlets located to the sides of the grille permit cooling of the brakes and supply the intake ducts of the engine. The side view stresses the impressive dimensions of the hood and the sweeping front fenders which highlight the mid-front layout of the mechanicals and seem desirous to convey the power of the engine. The volume of the front end is balanced by the sturdy rear fenders and compact trunk which endow the entire vehicle with a muscular, forceful look. Round lighting clusters have re-appeared to the rear as on certain mythical Berlinettas of the past. «The rear pillars of the roof, which do not have a static function, are particularly interesting – comments Fabrizio Valentini, Pininfarina Design Vice Director – they are detached from the surface of the characteristic teardrop rear window and act as aerodynamic “flying buttresses” contributing to enhancing vehicle negative lift and stability».For the interior, Pininfarina has created a sporting, frill-free functional and ergonomic environment combining extremely strong, light-weight materials, such as carbon fiber and aluminum, with warm, elegant leather. The carbon fiber parts form a sort of “functional skeleton” consisting of a horizontal element on the dashboard with the air vents and a vertical central element which includes the radio and controls and crosses the console and tunnel. In clear contrast, the remaining panels more directly in contact with the body are lined with leather and with uncluttered, seamlessly integrated surfaces. The seats have a sporting, wrap-round design and are equipped with an innovative electro-pneumatic system for regulation of the padding. Therefore it is easy to understand why it has recently garnered so many awards. Starting from the title of “Car of the Year” assigned by the English EVO magazine for its outstanding performance and the quality of the driving experience: the panel dubbed it “the most complete and thrilling front-engined Ferrari of them all, indeed the greatest CT ever made”. The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano was also voted “Supercar of the Year” by BBC Top Gear Magazine who declared it “the best Ferrari of the modern era.
